I started this post in October and just never got around to finishing it, so it’s superrrr old, but I’m posting it anyway for me because of the memories. This six months of living in Uganda is already holding such special memories that I don’t want to forget! I thought I had more photos, but I actually took mostly videos so this post is a little short, but this weekend was one of the most fun since moving to Uganda!
Early October I made the best last minute decision of my life and took a trip down to the Munyonyo area of Kampala for the Royal Ascot Goat Races. Yes you read that correct, goat races, and it was every bit as amazing as you’d think. It was a huge event, imagine Uganda’s version of the Kentucky Derby mixed with Coachella. People came decked out in giant hats and their best clothes, but also got down to some loud crazy music surrounded by vendors and lots of alcohol. The event was held at the most beautiful resort right on Lake Victoria and was such a fun break from life up North.
It was such a needed weekend out of town for me, a weekend for me to let go of the old, and embrace the new. To cut ties on the past and focus on who is presently in my life and to learn to lean into this beautiful new country I call home. I went with some sweet new friends from my town and made a weekend out of it.
I didn’t know it would be as big of an event as it turned out to be, but people came dressed to the nines, they had Uganda musicians perform, a fashion show, food vendors, and of course the pinnacle, the goat races.
It was a super rainy day, so we were all a complete muddy mess, shoes completely ruined, but it was so fun to not care and simply enjoy the day
If you’re ever in Uganda during this event go. I had no idea what it would be like, but it ended up being a total blast, something so uniquely “Uganda”, that I will never forget! It’s not really something you can even explain, but rather something you need to experience (:
